Still life with natural objects
I feel to have come quite a long way since the first exercise of a Still Life with easel, sketchbooks and cloth. I found this composition centred on fruit very satisfying to draw – loved the extraordinary possibilities of colour harmonies and the flow of rhythmic line and shapes. Starting with the known, it was good to begin the exploration with pencil and then with pastels before working with pen and wash and then in the finished exercise, with paint.
By the time I got to using paint I felt to be thoroughly familiar with the subject and that we were working in harmony. The tonal sketch in pen and wash was very useful in securing a clear feeling for the tonal values that were needed. I felt also that the extended time I had spent in trying to learn about colour was beginning to come through. For the first time colour theory was beginning to make sense!
