Final paintings

The second of my final paintings was a huge departure from my ‘comfort zone’ – I wanted to try to express ‘GARDEN’ in purely abstract terms…..never tried before but enjoyed doing the colour sketch in the journal. From my weeks of absorption in the garden it seemed to me that there are two strong elements – structural and ephemeral.  I wanted to bring these two elements into an abstract image.

I began with the strong sweep of blue applied with the palette knife to suggest the garden wall, followed by strong yellows, oranges and greens in broad sweeps of colour –

I continued to develop other elements within this composition depicting the flowers, seed heads, strong verticals of bamboo and Verbascum using colour and collage …I like the simplicity of these early images and possibly with more experience may have stayed with them.  The final painting I think has the elements I wanted to express and as a composition, I feel happy with it.  I am not sure that it is my style of painting!
